Tasik Biru HASH Ride Report- Yellow Manta

Last Sunday's hash in Tasik Biru is special for me in many ways:

1. It was my first hash ride for this year! Passed the one in Kiara as was afraid of trail congestion.
2. It was my first hash ride as a MEMBER of KLMBH! Think it makes more sense if I plan on riding more hashes this year. At RM15 per ride for guests, I recoup my RM70 membership fee in 5 rides.
3. It was my first time riding Tasik Biru! Scenic lake though I didn't really stop to enjoy the views.
4. It was my first ride on the Nomad this year! Time to shake the dust off and train my lower body (legs). Surprisingly the Nomad didn't feel as heavy as I'd expected it to be after all this while being spoiled by my 'feather-light' Yeti or the even lighter HT. May be there wasn't any occasions where I had to get off and push.
5. It was my first ride this year that I was faster than Simon Guinness! Despite his lighter wheels. He had one can too many of the black stuff the night before, so I was told. Plus he had a 'cha lat' time at Kiara too on Sat morning with our residential Kiara specialist, Gerard 'Cha Lat' Tan. Who wisely avoided the hash lest he ended up slower than Simon.
6. It was my first ride ever with a heart rate monitor! Glad to know I never hit maximum HR throughout the ride. May be I didn't push myself hard enough. Also surprised to find that my HR actually goes up when I am munching an apple. Happy to know also that I burnt 1,710 calories but added back more than 2,000 calories during the port-ride pigout.
7. It was the first time I'd ever heard of URUT BAWAH during lunch at a rather nice fishing place in Sg Buloh new village. Seems that's Choy's regular post-ride activity somewhere in Tasik Selatan. It got Dot all excited too and now she's hounding him for the contact number. Seems this kinda massage does wonder for ladies too. Unker Danny too is looking forward to the next ride at Tasik Selatan, if any.
8.It was the first time ever I had seen Tan Sri Bok holding a bottle (not a glass, mind you) of Guinness Stout. Vincent Chin has the photographic evidence. Wonder when he's gonna post on Facebook.

This coming Sunday we are riding Kiara and doing the 'cha lat' version by popular request. As usual meet 8.00am in front of KSH Bikes.

Sungai Pusu was a washout. We rode Sofea Jane instead...

Sungai Pusu was a wash out on Sunday morning. It was either Kiara, Bak Kut Teh, Kemensah or back to bed.
Kemesah it is then...
The plan sounded real good. We were supposed to visit Sofea Jane. Interesting...I have heard about this trail but never been to this part. It was originally called Kubang Gajah Waterfall. It is now made famous by the actress in the movie Perempuan, Isteri dan Jalang where there was a scene in the movie where Sofea Jane took a dip at the waterfall. Since then, the waterfall has been named after her. Seems its not far from the usual trail head. 15 riders. Off we went. Trail was up and up and up. Almost 3 clicks of tarmac pointing up. Then we entered the trail head. Another 3 clicks upwards. This time in singlr tracks... Lovely. at the peak. It was 2clicks down towards the famous Water Fall. Nice...
I was lost for words when i set my eyes upon the waterfall. This is sweet. Who would have guess the existence of such a waterfall just a drive away , right smack in KL itself. You definetly have to be there to believe it. Pity there is no flat spot or a pond to swim in. We could do a camp ride if the flat spot was available. For now, you will have to walk down about 50meters of jungle trail to actually touch any bit of water.
This tree with fruits grows in abundance. No idea what it is. Looks really juicy and tasty though. I was staring at it for quite a bit. This was one sight i remember most about this trail, aside from the waterfall. You cant miss this if you ever happen to come by. Anyone has any idea what this is?
20 minutes of talking spent, off we went. This time around it was 2 clicks uphill march. I had to keep the old cocks for company. The Manta was still drippy from this nose. Reward came at the end of the 2 clicks walk. Now its downhill all the way to the tarmac again. Everyone rode off like a monkey with its ass on fire. Clean nice single tracks all the way for 3 clicks. Sweet...
Upon reaching the tarmac, we took a right turn up another hill for a detour to another waterfall. Same same again. Up hill for almost 2 clicks. This uphill i didnt mind one bit. It was right smack through a bamboo forest. A lot like the old BATU DAM trail which is lost now. These bamboos are huge. Size of my legs . Up came the so called waterfall after 2 clicks. Well... Hobbits would call that a watefall. Really. It was like 3 feet high. We were lost for words again. But hey..It is still nice. This is more accesible i guess, judging from the presence of plastics bag left behind. Sigh..
That was more or less the ride for the Sunday. Of course, we went for the Chicken Rice reload before heading home to wash the toilet. You cant do a good job washing the toilet on a empty stomach right? Its only fair to eat some before you lose some...

Sungai Pusu Ride 19th FEB 2012

Sunday M&D Ride - Sg PusuWe plan to ride Sg Pusu this Sunday, a destination that we have not been to for more than 2 years now! Adrian Chan rode it recently and from the pix he posted on FB, looks still to be a good ride. He made it to the Switchback at the peak of the Bamboo Trail but this Sunday we shall try to venture further to see if we can at least get to the first campsite, trail conditio...ns permitting. Otherwise we can also take the first branch off to another campsite where PCC last had a ride n camp and almost got trapped by rising waters the next day following a night of heavy rain. Those who were on the trip will remember how Simon Guinness' 60ft nylon rope saved the day for us! No way could we have crossed the river otherwise....

Sungai Buaya Report...12FEB 2012

PCC's Old Cock

SG BUAYA OTAI JAMBOREE – 12 Feb 2012
Great idea this Old Timer Jamboree organized by Sg Buaya Cycling Club last Sunday. Such a refreshing change to see riders closer my age or older ONLY up there on the rostrum collecting their prizes! For the uninitiated, the event called Sg Buaya OTAI Jamboree was open only to riders above 41 years old and involved riding a loop of 25km in those great hills around the small little town of Sg Buaya, Selangor.
We managed to round up only 10 old cocks from our regular Mud & Dirt riders (so it seems our riders are relatively young) and didn’t win the prize for the group with the biggest contingent this time round. In case you didn’t know, that was exactly what we won last year at another jamboree organized by SBCC!
Lest you are wondering, the 10 old cocks were Fong, Simon, Gerard, Gan, Choy, Vincent, Victor, KY, Kenny and I. Our best bets for a placing were Kenny, Gan and Simon in the above-50 category but alas, the field was just too strong. Didn’t know we have so many fit old cocks out there. Which included our good ole’ friend Robert Madge all the way from Spain who took 2nd position in this category (and 5th overall if not mistaken)!
Shortly after flag off at 8.30am sharp, I was left very much to my own devices at the back of the pack, me being a slow warmer. For some genetic reasons, I can never dart off like most people do at any rides but require a rather long period to warm up. Which is why I can never do well in short events. Not that I do well in longer events either, but at least I get more time to catch up with my buddies.
So last Sunday, it was a ‘lonely’ ride for me all the way until about 5km to the finish line that I finally saw KY as he trudged up a hill. He told me Gerard, Fong and Victor had just overtaken him. From there we stuck together and at the bottom of the last big hike-a-bike, Gerard radioed to say he just collected his last sticker at the top of the hill. Even our ‘sick’ Vincent was way ahead of us. May be he rides faster when sick. Victor was supposed to keep me company at the back but I think I last saw him before even the start of the offroad sections…. Somehow everybody was fast that day. No stopping every 2km for a chitchat or 5km for a makan. Yet they didn’t win any placing, sigh…..
Overall, another good ride on those lovely singletracks of Sg Buaya even if a bit too short. All of us were back at the finish line just after 11am. Seems Kenny was back even before 10am!  This time Simon outrode Gan. Must be the new wheels that cut Simon’s bike’s weight by 2.7lbs! Or may be Gan was held back by the long queue of riders squeezing into the first singletrack. I was.
If it’s any consolation, at least Kenny was lucky once again in the lucky draws and brought home a funny looking bike with 20-inch wheels. A minivelo? And I was given the honour by the MC to give away the special prize for the biggest (heftiest) rider! First prize was a 4-wheel ATV but this was won by a lucky dude from Perak. Wonder how he brought it home!

Ride Report Kiara...

Kiara Discovery ...
We all have different roles to play. Be it at work or at home. Seems most don't notice that this role playing also carries itself over to our hobbies. Sometimes we forget what role we were trying to attain. I know many in the cycling fraternity that are closet "Lance Armstrong" wannabes. A few wants to be "Richard Marx"... duh. Don't ask me why...
So. Last week's Kiara ride. The group decided to explore the long lost Kampung Trail. We have not been to this part of Kiara for years. It's a huge pity. Most of the original rails have been long reclaimed by nature. However, it was still fun riding down Janie's and Lightning Ridge. The Roller Coaster is still there with added attraction. A 50 foot sheer drop on the ride. You have a foot of walking ledge as you come along this bit. Miss one step, you get featured in the next day's newspaper.
It was also during this ride that i notice the many hidden character among the riders. Be it the Old Cocks or the Spring Chickens. It was really disturbing after you notice it. Creepy...

Cha Lat....
Gerard " Cha Lat":- He was the ride leader this time around. This is a closet Kim Jong Il. Out of nowhere, our friend decided to play the slave driver for this week. First , let's do the Office. We had 14 riders. Then Magic Carpet. Still 14 riders. Now lets climb Twin Peaks. We picked up 1 riders. Total riders 15. From the peak. Let's head towards Segambut. No, no, no.... keep right. No short cuts on the horse trails. Take a left up to Lightning Ridge. Still 15 riders. Now swing left towards Roller Coaster. Exit at the apartments. 15 riders. Ok you guys get to chew on Nasi Lemak. Done? Now proceed to Plan C. 2 riders started to weep at the rear. On the tarmac, 3 riders were asking to be put out of their misery. Come on now children!! Lets do the Boulder. 13 riders left. 2 sneaked off via equestrian club exit. Ok. Now lets go walk across the bridge at Wasteland. Bernard winced. Ok. march up towards Barracuda now. 11 riders. Back at the Kiara tarmac now. 3 riders had stomach ache. Bernard turned into a deaf pussy and gracefully rode away towards Crossroads. Ok boys, left turn into 2K! Exit 2K. Hey... !? 8 riders left. What's going on? Where is the rest? Never mind. Let's grab 4K reverse as we head down? Peter started taking deep breaths and patting himself...We exit at Magic Carpet climb up to reservoir ok? Nobody dared make a sound. Look we are back the tarmac again!! Whats say we cut across to Carnival and loop back to Office? I lost my hearing at this point. Pointed me bike down the tarmac. Sayonara...
Sorry mate. I am pretty sure being sent to an actual Gulag would have been less painful. Really. Riders were dropping like flies. Our friend "Cha Lat" must really want to be a Kim really badly. That is the only sane explaination.

Turbo Gan:- This one is a no brainer. Turbo showed me his water bottle for this Kiara ride. He had with him a 350ml bottle. I was lost for word.
"You planning to do Kiara with just that ?!"
" Yep...."
"Do i have to help carry out dead old people nowadays?"
And truth be told, he did manage Kiara with that little bottle. Honestly, he was in pain at some part of the trail. Seems dehydration causes back pain. More specifically, kidney pain. Not to be confused with muscle spasm. Muscle wise , he was fine and dandy. Up till Lighting Ridge that is. From there on wards, he was no longer a kidney patient wannabe. He was just quiet and focused. I never would have suspected he wanted to be a Old Kidney Patient. Now, thats news even to me.

Yellow Manta:- This is the new improved version. Seems the Manta is now a Tai Chi Master. Besides doing the Watermelon moves and the Deep Breathing without Farting Technique. He has also mastered the art of getting blood to the groin area extremely well. This is especially helpful if you have been in the saddle for more than 3 hours. He did a free demo during our break at the cross road hut. Pay attention now.
Always choose a shaded spot. Spread your legs shoulder wide. Put your helmet and bags down at the side. Hands in front of you. Take a deep breath. With your good hand. Pat your nuts.

Turbo Gan 2:-Multiple character this one. Not happy with being just an Old Kidney Patient. He actually managed another role during the ride.Very schizoid. Me impressed. This was very discreet, you would have missed it. Unless you paid plenty of attention to it. We were all fooled after so many rides. But not me. I saw through it all. Seems that Turbo is not a shy and quiet person by nature. Him being quiet and discreet with a sage like smile. Familiar right? Thats what he wants you to believe. He was actually playing the Muhammad Ali role. Not the punching bit. More so the Parkinson's bit. Which explain him being quiet and focus on Lightning Ridge. Refer top please.

Princess Lena:-Well , there isn't that much to say. Lena is always the sweet smilling thing at the side. All fair and rosy with a ready smile. On Sundays, she wakes up grumpy. During the week, she lets him sleep.

Bernard :-With the appearance of a Princess, there will also be another character. Mind you, he is way too pretty to be compared to a frog. This is one of the Seven Dwarfs. Grumpy to be precise. Grumpy here is not happy when the ride starts at 7am. He is also not happy when the ride starts at 830am. He is also grumpy his bike is made from charcoal. He is even more unhappy when we start the ride without singing the national anthem. Grumpy. Ho Ho ho....Merry Christmas. Now start frowning.

Choi!!:-This was a huge revelation altogether. He actually admitted to it.By himself. We were all smilling.
To put things in perspective. Our friend here have been riding Kiara for donkey years. Rides the trails like a mountain goat. Goes dowhill like an ape on fire. Chatters nonstop about Kiara like a chimp. And he has never ridden Janie's. Or Clenched Sphincter's . Never heard of Lighthing Ridge. No idea about Roller Coaster. Ha.
In his own words upon reaching Devi's..." Yikess...! I am so JAKUN!!!. That part of Kiara was awesome. How come no one took me there before? When are we going back there again? Wow..."
Jakun is spot on. :P
This have been an interesting ride in a long long time. Having a communist ride leader whipping you about. Trying to make decent conversation with a dehydrated Parkinson's patient. And watching riders drop like flies in a desert.Watching Choi!! shriek like a little girl going down Janie's.
Nice.... Cant wait for Sunday to come again.

Kiara Segambut Trip over.

First proper ride after Chinese New Year. What a long break this have been. From throwing the back out, sitting on my ass for 3 weeks just to learn to walk again. Then New Year came along, another week of laying off. It really is quite awhile off the saddle. Not everyone gets to ride across the New Year like the Yellow Manta. I am beginning to suspect he is not going back home ang pows. Every year he returns from Sungai Siput with pictures of him riding during the New Year. How unfair.... What is the world coming to?

Sunday M&D Ride - Kiara
This time we really plan to do the 'Cha Lat' version i.e. riding the Kampung trail to Segambut side, something which we always wanted to do on all our previous rides at Kiara but for some reason or other always got distracted by the other trails.
Date: 5th Feb 2012
Start Time: 8:00am
Start Place: Outside KSH bike Shop, TTDI
Ride Description: 15-18km +/-. Nearly all single tracks, some rather technical and hilly with rocks and root all over the place. A short but challenging ride so come prepared for a full-body work-out.
Not recommended for first timers - a bit daunting. Bring mozzie repellent and a few snacks.
